Cultivating an Attitude of Gratitude ♥

by Fran on July 6, 2011

I am firmly convinced that the more grateful you are, the more opportunities you begin to see. Instead of seeing constraints, you see opportunities and instead of focusing on the things you wished were better, you see all the things that are already amazing. I do think there is something powerful in being grateful for the things you have, and actually living it out. Looking at life from a place of gratitude gives you a whole different perspective and often opens up doors you might have missed from a vantage point of ungratefulness.

How to Be Grateful

* Think Bigger – The world is much, much bigger than just yourself. Take a step back and realize it!

* Gain Context – Travel. Research. Learn. Look (or even better, experience) how other people live and realize how fortunate you are.

* Help Others – I would not be where I am today without the help of a lot of different people. Chances are neither would you. Pass it on.

* Make a list – Make a list of things you are grateful for. Look at it every day.

* Serve – You can volunteer on trips or on the weekend, but you can also serve other people on a day to day basis every time you interact.

Here’s what I have learned about starting a Gratitude practice:

1. – Commit: This is a spiritual practice that gains momentum over time and with practice.

2. – Begin: So do it. Sit down with pen and paper or at your computer and start, “I am grateful for…”

3. – Write it down.

4. – Feel it: Move into the feeling. Dance it. Sing it. Aspire to a fullness of heart, no matter what is going on around you.

5. – Choose a set time of day: You may want to do this when you first wake in the morning or late at night before you go to sleep.

6. – Practice present-moment gratitude: As you move through your day, pause now and then when you remember, and think as you do something “I am grateful.”

7. – Share the gratitude: Partner with someone. You will keep each other going and that sense of obligation to that person will give you the push you need to write your list on those days when it just seems too hard.

8. – Do not stop once you start to see results!

9. – Allow yourself to be human: Grumble if you must. Miss the odd day here and there. Write, “I am grateful I am writing my gratitude list” five times if you can think of nothing else.

May every little thing in your life be filled with beauty and may you feel wonder and gratitude for it.

Are you ready to start this process?

Thanks for the reminder, Fran, that it is always important to be grateful. I think that your list of 9 steps in the practice of gratitude is awesome and I am definitely going to be mindful of them!

    Hi Fran,

    I luv these tips!

I practice most on a consistent basis. I started today with a silly little dance with my girlfriend Kelli.  It was absurd, really, but guess what? It entirely aligned me for my high energy day, and my mind instantly turned toward the things I feel grateful for.

See the good in things and the good in things finds you. Simple. Train yourself to see the good in things. Like you note, you develop a sort of gratitude momentum which carries from moment to moment, hour to hour, day to day.

It becomes easier to be grateful for things when you make it a habit to see the good in all.

Thanks for sharing with us Fran!

Hi Fran. I used to have a gratitude journal. Time to start it again I think. Each night I want to write down all the things I am greatful for from that day, as well as what I am happy about, proud of, what I love, what I am enjoying the most and what I am committed to.
    Thanks for the reminder.

Nice post Fran and nice ideas!

I use some of these and others with clients also.  It all leads to the same place, ones connection with ‘who they are’, and all the magic happens :)

    An Attitude of Gratitude!

Every minute is a gift and the idea of creating a daily practice of gratitude builds on that attitude.

It’s interesting to note but the idea of allowing yourself to be human is something that people are sometimes scared to do.

Showing frailties is considered a fault but in reality it’s what makes us more appealing.

If only we accepted that idea, then we would become more open and connected to others.

    Great post Fran!

An attitude of gratitude! I do a series over at my blog called Thankful Fridays, where I feature people and ask them to mention things that they are thankful about! It has been a lovely series and really love the experience that people bring along with them. Makes us even more grateful for the smaller things in life. Writing it down is extremely helpful. When it is there right in front of us, makes a world of a difference.

When you practice gratitude, you are telling the Universe that you are ready to receive so much more! Learning to practice and cultivate an attitude of gratitude in your everyday life is key if you’d like to welcome more abundance into your life.

Imagine if money or happiness were your lover – would you tell it that you were unsatisfied when it showed up on your doorstep… or would you jump up and down with joy and smother it with kisses the second it appeared?

I’m grateful for you, Fran :) .  You’re an inspiration…almost every time I find myself wishing something was working better or faster, you’re around the corner on FB about to express gratitude for one thing or another and lift the spirits of everyone around you.

I kept a gratitude journal for years (I called it a happiness journal, but it’s purpose was the same)…I’m inspired to go dig it up and pick up where I left off!

Living From GratitudeFor most of my adult life I believed that an attitude of gratitude is a good thing to have. As often as possible I tried to be humble and grateful for the blessings I received, but I didn’t fully grasp just how powerful a gratitude practice could be until I set an intention to “Live From Gratitude” for an entire day. What does that mean, to “Live From Gratitude?” I decided that I would stay in a grateful state of mind and give deep, heartfelt thanks for everything I did, saw, felt, and experienced that day. From the moment I opened my eyes early that morning, I began giving thanks for everything and everyone that entered my awareness. I thought about each of my family members and friends, and gave thanks for their presence in my life. I gave thanks for my home, my business, my car, my clothing, my health, and my cats. As I moved through my daily activities, I gave thanks for everything I touched, ever ything I saw or heard, everything I felt, and everything that happened to me – even the annoying and challenging experiences.I gave thanks for our dishes and utensils as I washed them, as well as the water I was washing them in, and for my hands that enabled me to wash them. A few of those items were wedding gifts for my husband and I, and as I washed each one, I recalled our wedding day with joy and gratitude, and gave thanks for my husband and the life we share together.During my business activities that day, I gave heartfelt thanks for my clients and the passionate work that fulfills me and allows me to make a difference in the world. I also gave thanks for the challenges my work sometimes brings, simply because they strengthen me.I expressed sincere gratitude for everything I saw, heard, felt, did or experienced throughout the entire day, big or small, good or bad. Not only did I SAY “thank you” for these things, I made sure to really FEEL the fee lings of gratitude and appreciation for them. As I’m sure you can imagine, that was a LOT of gratitude! The results that came from my day of living from gratitude were astounding. It was one of the most powerful days of my life. All day long I kept meeting the nicest, greatest people everywhere I went. My income for that day jumped up to roughly three times what it normally was, without me having to lift a finger to make it happen. I kept noticing awesome opportunities, tools, and resources that would help me grow my business or improve some aspect of my life. Some of these things had been right under my nose all along, but I’d never noticed them before.I received so many great gifts as a result of my day of living from gratitude, but the true gift of that day is the way I felt all day long. Never in my life can I remember feeling so humbled, so blessed, so RICH. Everything around me became SACRED in ways that I can’t even describe. Stru ggle, strain, anxiety, frustration, fear, anger . . . they all just faded away. Everything I saw and experienced was uplifting, inspiring and beneficial. My life was transformed that day, into something that I never dreamed would be possible. I’d thought my life was good before that – but my new attitude of gratitude took it to a whole new level of goodness. That day stands out in my memory as one of the best days of my life. In fact, it was so powerful that I’ve since adopted my “living from gratitude” mind-set as an ongoing intention. Every day I strive to live from gratitude – and each day gets more and more magical the longer I do it.Try it yourself and see if it doesn’t have the same wonderful effect on your life.Wendy Betterini
